Saint of the Month

St. Marguerite d’Youville was the first Canadian-born saint. Widowed at 23 with several children, she opened a small store to support her family and spent the profits on those poorer than herself. She founded the Sisters of Charity of the General Hospital (Grey Nuns) and took over the hospital’s operation when it was deep in debt. Trusting in God’s providence, she worked hard and saved the hospital. Her vision to care for the poor and sick carries on in a spirit of hope. It’s not surprising, therefore, that when beatified, Pope John XXIII called her “Mother of Universal Charity.”

Symbols of Our Faith

The ichthys, composed of two intersecting arcs, is a symbol that has been used to represent Jesus Christ. It dates back to the second century A.D. and, according to tradition, was the symbol used during a time of intense religious persecution to let other Christians know they were in safe company. As it comes from the Greek word for fish, it sometimes appears with the Greek letters ΙXϴYΣ which means Jesus Christ, Son of God.

Prayer of the Month

God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, overflowing source of the mission, help us to understand that life is mission, gift and commitment. May Mary, our intercessor help each one of us to be prophetic witnesses to the Gospel, by constantly answering: Here I am, Lord, send me! Amen.

Share Goodness

Donate canned and dry goods to the St. Vincent de Paul Society as a way of expressing your thanks for all that God has given you. You might also want to donate your gently used clothing to those in need. Write down the name of five people who need help and offer to pray for them.
